Working On Your Yard

Maybe you have already set up your irrigation system and have fully landscaped your yard -- now the fun really begins.  Though you may have planted unique shrubs and flowers, fed by sprinklers or an elaborated drip system, how do you maintain all your hard work and landscaping investment?  This answer is a proper mix and use of lawn care tools and gardening equipment.

You'll have to decide how much time and effort you want to personally invest in doing your yard work before purchasing your lawn care tools.  For now, let's assume that you are going to take complete control of your yard maintenance.

For weeding between rose bushes or other hearty shrubs, a traditional hoe will do the trick.  You will often see gadgets advertised that are promoted as an easy remedy for soil turning and weed removal, but if your soil isn't soft and easily tillable to start with, many of these lawn care and garden tools aren't very effective.

A regular garden shovel or spade is a must-have item for your garden tool collection.  For the lawn and garden, a lightweight rake will always come in handy. Depending on the kind of lawn mower you use, a rake is often used for grass clipping cleanup.  If you've got a lot of deciduous trees, the same rake is a necessity for seasonal leaf messes.

For power lawn care tools, an electric or gas edger is a common item that you should consider if you value the look of neat and tidy lawn borders.  And, to get around the nooks and crannies, a weed wacker is perfect for getting to grass that is out of mower reach.  For further aesthetic cleanup, a leaf or grass blower is ideal for quick removal of leaves and grass clippings.

If your lawn borders on or joins with delicate flower containing flower beds, a nice pair of hand shears will allow you to trim the grass without the damage that might be done by a power tool.  Hand operated grass clippers are helpful for trimming around sprinkler heads to allow for unencumbered water coverage.

Back to the garden and flower beds, a small hand tiller to move the soil and allow for proper air entry and irrigation will lead to healthier plants, shrubs and flowers.  If you have a large amount of shrub-like plants, hedge trimmers will make your gardening easier.  For fruit trees and thicker shrubs, you'll need to add pruning shears to your tool collection.

There are loads of additional lawn care tools and gardening equipment from which to choose.  For most gardening aficionados, gardening is an activity with a high level of enjoyment.  So after investing in tools, take good care of your equipment so it will continue to allow you to successfully take care of your lawn and yard.
